Entry 10: Leadership, Participation, and Collaboration
Throughout my time student teaching, the school communities were always looking forward to an upcoming event that includes one and all. These events required all hands-on deck; leadership, collaboration, and communication. I’m grateful to have been welcomed into the professional circle that orchestrated school and community events.
My first event at Ware Elementary was the production of James and the Giant Peach. Fourth and fifth graders stayed after school every day until 5:15 to rehearse the musical. A team of teachers, paras, librarians, myself, and parents all worked together to ensure the students had everything they would need to be successful in their performance. I was able to help manage rehearsal everyday as well as participate with spotlight the day f the performance.
Next, I was able to assist in directing the first-grade program, Take Me Out to the Ball Game. First graders prepared during class for their program filled with singing, instruments, student speakers, and movement! I helped run these lessons as well as prepared many props for decorations. Parents enjoyed a smooth performance of the program and students reflected on their songs the next day in class.
Outside of school, I took a leadership position in K-States Kappa Upsilon chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota to plan the Instrument Petting Zoo. This event took place on campus during open house. I communicated with local businesses to bring booths and supply instruments for the day. The flyer was created and sent out to general music teachers in surrounding schools to distribute to their 4th graders who are preparing to begin band next year. Music, theatre, and dance students all pitched in to man a station and assist students who visited our building event.
