The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in creating, arranging, and improvising.
Standard two ensures the music teacher has skills in creating, arranging, and improvising. From studying and creating lesson plans for Orff instruments to playing in a collegiate jazz ensemble; I have gained experience improvising melodies and accompaniments of various levels and styles. Through private instruction and university coursework I have become proficient in performing accompaniment on keyboard instruments as well as on ukulele and guitar. I also have a collection of pieces which I have arranged for performances other than the originally intended instrumentation. In addition to arranging, I have had the opportunity to compose original works of my own, some of which have been performed at live recitals. An example of an arrangement is attached below.
In a study (below) conducted by Principal Mark Thomas of Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan; teachers implemented “choice reading” in every subject and saw a shift in the student body from being struggling readers to eager readers. One way I would be able to incorporate choice reading in music is by providing the classroom/individual student of any developmental stage with customized and tailored literature that interests them. Self-motivation is induced as a result, thus making learning new concepts a fun activity. By exemplifying this standard as an educator, I am enabled to bring students to their highest aptitude of musical literacy.
