Standard 3
The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in reading and writing music.
Standard three requires teachers to be skilled in reading and writing music, an important skill set for providing appropriate content and literature to students. This is because having good aural and notation abilities allow the teacher to create new music or recreate music to be used in class instruction. This standard also allows for the teacher to identify mistakes in notation or performance and correct them, benefiting student learning.
I have taken several courses preparing me to meet this standard. In my conducting experience, I have read scores for concert band, brass ensemble, four-part choir, and four-part mixed instrumentation. I have also written and arranged music for instrumental quartets, duets, solo with piano, large ensemble, and voice. In regard to aural skills, I have reached a level of proficiency in sight singing, sight rhythms, melodic dictation, harmonic dictation, and chord and interval identification. One way students can benefit from my experience is by integrating these skills into their own education. Through both hands-on and technological games and activities, students develop their musical literacy as well.
Artifacts attached include a video of myself conducting an ensemble and a clarinet etude I composed.
