Standard 4
The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in listening to, analyzing, describing, and performing music.
Standard four covers listening to, analyzing, describing, and performing music. One way I exemplify this standard is through my experience as a University Band conductor. In this ensemble, I prepared for rehearsals by listening to professional examples of my selected works and comparing them to what was being played in class time. I had to aurally hear and correct passages in real time. Along with listening, I completed a full-score analysis of each piece with a unit study. These broke down the literature into its most basic organization and descriptions with history, respectively. An example of this analysis is included for a Mozart brass ensemble work and a full ensemble piece by Erick Morales. At the end of each block, the pieces were performed in concert.
With these skills in place, students benefit in all the same ways. Providing them with high-quality recordings sets an excellent example and model for their own music-making. Analyzing the music makes it easier to explain form, time, etc. in a more basic-style and simpler terms for student understanding. Giving students background knowledge or accessing their prior knowledge of a piece in combination with the listening sets them up to individually describe their observations and opinions. Lastly, performance opportunities expand musical experience in students. Al in all, the more comfortable teacher is with their own skills, the more each skill will be passed down to the students.
