Standard 5
The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in selecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and evaluating music performance within the context of music education.
Standard 5 requires the music teacher to be skilled in all aspects of music selection, rehearsal strategies, and proper evaluation of performance. As seen in my lesson plans and philosophy of education, I make it a priority to provide students with a wide variety of musical repertoire. However, each lesson plan is similar in that they contain multiple strategies to engage students in the learning process. This ensures their exposure to historical periods, new cultures, and performance opportunities by grade level.
A literature review used for music selection is included in this essay along with a page of my handbook with rehearsal expectations.
By possessing these characteristics as a PK-12 music teacher, each day is planned to set the students up for success while simultaneously providing them with a developmentally-appropriate challenge. Facilitating learning rather than micromanaging projects frees the students to utilize provided methods of comprehension as well as their own ideas. At the end of the day, whatever path students take is embraced so long as they are capable of self and peer evaluation in the reflection period. With the capabilities described in the standard as an educator, teacher is able to build the same abilities for students to use for themselves.
